WebAR Mixed Reality Gargoyle Activation for Universal Destinations and Experiences

WebAR Mixed Reality Gargoyle Activation: Extending the Horror Beyond the Park

Universal Destinations and Experiences partnered with Lucid Reality Labs to create a web based mixed reality activation that expanded the world of Halloween Horror Nights beyond the physical event. Towering above the iconic arches in Hollywood and Orlando, a digital gargoyle came to life, breaking free from stone and merging with the transformed arches that echoed a gothic aesthetic, turning the entrance itself into part of the unfolding story.

Triggered through the Universal app, guests could unlock a hidden AR sequence that began with a whisper and ended with a roar. As the story unfolded, guests aligned their devices with the arches and watched as the creature cracked from stone, spread its wings, and took flight over the crowd before vanishing into the fog. The scene created a powerful illusion: the gargoyle jumped from the arch, screams erupted behind it, and in the distance, silhouettes of other gargoyles could be seen carrying people into the night sky.

Developed using web based AR with advanced world tracking and environmental mapping, the WebAR Mixed Reality Gargoyle Activation achieved precise alignment between the virtual creature and the physical environment, ensuring a seamless transformation of the park’s signature gateway into a living part of the narrative.

The activation captivated audiences across both coasts, transforming Universal’s arches into shared moments of fright and wonder. By connecting web based AR with the Universal app and extending the story into social platforms, the experience elevated Halloween Horror Nights into an evolving universe of interactive storytelling and audience engagement.
